Ethanol Blending Procedures
There are technically 3 different ways to blend ethanol with motor gasoline.
A. Online Blending
Ethanol is added slowly and continuously into the moving stream of Motor Gasoline via a smaller line inserted or ‘Y’ type joints in a larger pipe at the loading gantry. Ethanol can also be added in small slug or pulsed quantities. Homogeneity is achieved through turbulent movement.

B. In-Tank Blending
In this process, tanks shall not have water bottom. The blending of ethanol and Motor gasoline shall take place in line and the blended product shall be taken in another tank. On completion of the operation, the pipeline is left with only MG without any traces of ethanol. The churning process takes place through the circulation or through jet mixer or side entry churning in the tank. TMB(VT)/All level (HT) should be ‘Text A’. If density is beyond +-3 kg/m3, then churning is continued till homogeneity is attained. BFT is done before release of product.

C. Splash /Sequential Blending
Some quality checks in the blending process are
- All samples shall be drawn, tested and retained as per procedure laid down in IQCM
- If density is beyond permissible limit/tank change over
- Appearance
- Density at 15℃
- Color Visual
- Ethanol Content
- Reconciliation of ethanol shall be done on daily basis
